The first thing you hear in Victory Gardens Theater’s Blackbird is the sound of an acoustic guitar—a gentle prelude to the fireworks to come.
I was so horrified but so compelled by what was happening that I had the whole thing read in an hour. Wow this was quite a trip and I am glad to have read and stumbled onto this gothic work. Now called Peter, he’s the manager of a medical-supplies manufacturing firm.

Fascinating elements are only alluded to in part, such as Una’s loneliness as a child, Una’s relationships with her parents after the ‘truth’ about her and Ray’s relationship emerges, and the general repercussions on Ray’s later relationships.

Few reunions of this sort are happy, but this one is especially fraught. Blackbird, which was last seen in with Daniels as Ray and Alison Pill as Una, is a distressing two-hander about the dangerous influence and magnetism of traumatic events. In so doing, these four stage artists carefully confront us with the playwright’s controversial take on a longtime social taboo.
For a long time writing, was the only thing he could do. The play asks many questions and allows us, the audience, to provide some of the answers albeit through much debate. The subject matter was intense and not what I expected at all, but I ended up loving it. It may not be coincidental that Knives hlackbird Hens is, at least partly, about grappling hold of the means of expression. Not sure it has too much more to it than one really sick punch to the gut.

Of course, it is much more complicated than that, for the film takes place more in the moment when the protagonists are adults and they look at this past, but I see the premise as paramount. Not sure how I feel about this play or the characters within. I was able to find some clips on YouTube, but not much.

Or perhaps I should rephrase that. Sometimes, this is a play that seems almost to be using all its edgy, dark, and twisted – but beautiful – writing, to sadly go for much more obvious and less daring cavid than may first appear. The ambiguity in the morals and the plot have kept this work very present in my mind. Seuss’ The Grinch Fantastic Beasts: Una is on general release in the UK from Friday.
