I persevered and was rewarded, but somebody coming in without the benefit of the previous books might not. Hythrun Chronicles by Jennifer Fallon. I am still reading the third book in this series, and I initially wanted to write only a review based on the entire prequel trilogy at the end, but I decided against it, especially after letting the first two books sink in.

I loved being able to learn the backstory to Damin Wolfblade even if it did not really involve him yet because jennifef was just being born.
Certain events that I thought would turn out one way went in the completely opposite direction. So, I ignored this trilogy and pretty much dismissed it.

Political fantasy, where there is no earth-shattering threat vallon, can be boring, but Fallon avoids that trap as well. It had this wolfbalde fantasy feel but also that political aspect jennlfer made me love Elantris.
Yes, you did read correctly above. Marla may not have had the magic of the gods or the Harshini – but she definitely managed to make her mark on the world. It was an enjoyable read, but entirely too much work, especially when you moved over into the different countries and had more political factions and motive to deal with. I didn’t even want to cook because that just wasted valuable reading time. These criticisms apart, however, Wolfblade promises to be the jennifed book of another captivating trilogy.
Throughout reading, I have been very much torn between the question whether this is actually a well-written book or not. It’s a very gratifying arc for dallon most part, and one of the story’s strengths. Ultimately I would rate this book a 4. Thankfully, Fallon gets past that and ultimately delivers a wonderful book. One or two of them might prefer to be thought of as primarily literary or historical writers, but surely it’s time for fantasy to stop being the genre that dare not show its face? It is nice to see Marla’s growing and learning process. I enjoyed it’s sufficient and sometimes comical prose well-written in that it gets the point across in short chapters but got a little bored in the middle when we return to a magical world of the Hashini that were introduced in a previous trilogy by Fallon.

We meet Marla as a young woman, barely even coherent of her own identity and her rank. It literally kept me up until two in the morning, and that’s what tells me a book is a cut above the rest. The gods generally use their influence, magic users keep a low profile, and the human nobility do all of the dirty work.

There’s hints that things will get more complex later, but much of the book here seems an exercise of plot points, of getting characters in position and then just sort of leaving them there until they’re needed again.
